Mobile Phone Contract or Not!

I have always been concerned with how many outgoings/expenses I do monthly.
One important one was my O2 monthly contract. I currently pay £34.25/mth for a Blackberry Bold on an 18 month contract (600mins 1000texts).
This means I am paying a total of £616.68 and more (if i choose to have add ons like free landline calls and also before the VAT rate became 15%)

I then considered reviewing my contract position. My findings are astonishing.

From O2 website, And if I take an 18month contract (600 mins) from O2 on a Samsung Tocco it will be costing £34.26/mnth = £616.68

You can get a SIM-Only 1 monthly contract for £19.58 (600 mins 1200 texts) which is a total cost of £352.44 for 18 months,

Also if I buy a Samsung Tocco from O2 at £127.22 as Pay-As-You-Go and combine it with the SIM-only contract I will be paying £479.66 for 18 months.

This is a saving of £137.02 in 18 months, a freedom to cancel anytime, get a cheaper contract down the line, move to another mobile provider and control your monthly outgoings..

SharePoints Alerts from list items not working.

I came across a simple problem recently. Users setup alerts to a list (announcements). When they setup alerts, they get an automated email confirming the setup. But when new announcements are added to the list, users do not get alerts by email.

In the farm, I had 3 servers with different responsibilities. Then I noticed on the Timer Status 1 of the serves had failed. I spun to action, went into each server and restarted the Windows SharePoints Services Timer. This fixed the problem and alerts started coming through.

SharePoint User Unable to create Pages (User has Full Control)

I came across a problem recently, where a user you has full control on a particular site gets access denied whenever she wants to create a new page in a publishing site.

I did lots of permissions updates for the user until I noticed that she doesnt has rights to the Masterpage Gallery in the Publishing site.

So adding this user will solve the problem.

IIS Error - The path specified cannot be used at this time

Some clients of mine had a problem on their servers as they were unable to gain access to the IIS. An error “The path specified cannot be used at this time” shows up whenever you try to connect to the IIS service.

Solution
Go to services on the server displaying the error and restart IISAdmin. Remember you will have to restart dependencies services like WorldWideWeb Publishing, SMTP and HTTP SSL.

Setting up a Subdomain to use in your SharePoint Farm

I was at a clients and they needed to have users typing the company's subdomain URL to access thier SharePoint sites (e.g http://intranet.company.com).

Step 1 - Create a Host (A) record on your Domain Controller
  1. Go to DNS Manager on your DC
  2. Select your domain (e.g company.com)
  3. Right click and select New Host (A)
  4. Type in the prososed subdomain name (e.g intranet)
  5. Enter the IP address you will be assigning to that subdomain
  6. Click Add Host, then click done

Step 2 - Test your Subdomain

  1. If your network settings is correct you can ping the new subdomain and it will quickly show you "Pinging intranet.company.com [your IP address for the subdomain]... Request time out.

Step 3 - Add the new subdomain to the MOSS WFE NIC.

  1. On your MOSS front end, goto Control Panel>Network Connections> Select the NIC you are using for the local network
  2. Click Properties > Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) > Properties > Advanced > Add (under IP addresses) > type in your IP address for the sub domain.
  3. Click Ok > Ok till you leave the settings screen.

Step 4 - Test your subdomain again

  1. Ping the subdomain name (intranet.company.com)
  2. You should have the ping back now successful

Step5 - Create a Web App using the Subdomain

Crawl Logs - "The docfile has been corrupted" - Fix

I am running MOSS 2007 - pre SP1 on a client's Farm and I came across this error with the crawl logs "The docfile has been corrupted." for one of the documents.

I also noticed that the document and Excel 2003 file was not in the index and it didnt return any result if I perform a search for the document. When I googled it I came across a fix which I am still yet to test.

Here is the link Fix.

It is simply to save this excel file as a 2007 file, this should fix it.
